Loading INDI on RasPi Zero 2 W

Hi All,

I’m new to RasPi and INDI, but have high hopes for getting an auto guider based on the last version of the Orion auto guider cameras running on a RasPi Zero 2 W to make a mobile astrophotography setup.

Anyway, I’ve been trying to load INDI using these instructions:

https://indilib.org/download/raspberry-pi/category/6-raspberry-pi.html

And I have needed to do the download step several times, but then hit terminal crashes on the installation step:

sudo apt install indi-full gsc

The failures look like this: guiderich@pi:~ $ sudo apt install indi-full gscReading package lists… DoneBuilding dependency tree… DoneReading state information… DoneSome packages could not be installed. guiderich@pi:~ $I’m afraid I don’t know enough to know what this means has happened or what to do about it. I’m at the level of looking at online videos of folks doing this same thing and they seem to all just cruise right on by that point without an issue. Anyone know what this means or what should be done?

Unfortunately, that page is based on old info. Astroberry is no longer maintained.

You could potentially use Stellarmate or you can take a look at AstroArch https://github.com/devDucks/astroarch . The GUI would probably have to be disabled on either to run on a Pi Zero 2.

Not sure if the other OS is compatible- there would be more to do to make that work. Stupid question- why isn’t a version controlled for whatever RasPi instructions are posted to be able to work?

Thank you again,

-Rich

Astroberry was not maintained by the indilib team, it was a completely separate project. There is a PPA with Ubuntu compatible packages for x86_64 and aarch64 (arm64), but just not for debian. Nobody has has been willing or able to maintain a separate repo for Debian.

I have considered attempting to make one, I just have not had the availability to do so.

Thank you for the background. It seems pretty easy to misinterpret what really is going on. I’ll have to think about how to proceed- though obviously there’s more than one way. The RasPi came up while looking for ultra-low power consumption for auto guiding in the middle of nowhere with nice dark skies. One option is an ancient Vixen Polaris with a CG-4 drive modified to drive at the correct rate with a gear ratio modification, and then use ST-4 inputs. Just need some basic guiding intelligence, though.

I appreciate the input.

I’ve been trying to do a very light installation of INDI (server and webmanager) on raspbian lite (bookworm) RPI Zero 2W, only for an Onstep diy mount and the Pi HQ Camera (its for a project of mine of a micro smart telescope). But I’ve been hitting a wall trying to install INDI. It takes forever and always ends up with some error. I would love to be able to only install the necessary drivers, but haven’t been able to do it. Is there any guide or code for installing bare INDI with only selected drivers?
Thanks everyone.
Santiago

OnStep is included in INDI core library. For libcamera, you can checkout the indi-3rdparty repo (git clone), then go to indi-libcamera directory and run this:

cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr ../
sudo make install

Just make sure to install latest libcamera-dev from the Debian repos first.

Hi Jasem, thanks for the prompt reply. Sure I was finally able to install everything, but my question was if it is possible to avoid building and installing all indi core drivers, and instead just select in my case the onstep drivers. Regarding libcamera it worked. Thanks!

This may be a stupid question, but why does this work and installation onto a RasPi OS RasPi Zero 2 W doesn’t? I really don’t have a specific preference for any Linux flavor- my only goal was to be able to get a RasPi Zero 2 W running to be able to run INDI so a last generation Orion auto guider could drive corrections to either Celestron NexStar or AP CP3 mounts. So, I seem to have started at the wrong point, and am looking for where I should start, instead.

Thank you for your feedback,

-Rich

It’s possible only if you know your way around CMake and can remove the drivers manually from there.
